Following on from the last post regarding the Gr8Dundrum Run, to date we have raised almost £1,200.00 for Action Cancer and I would like to just say a few words of thanks to those who sponsored us, those who helped during our training and those who came on the day for support and encouragement. It was a great event well organised and good fun, well apart from the headwind on the beach and I’d also like to say well done to the members of the team.

Back in the shop we have been working away on several jobs and I have taken some time to gather a few snaps of the more interesting few starting with a batch of 10No. Oak tables we were commissioned to produce for a local private nursing home. Different brief to a household table as we had specific heights and access requirements to adhere to never mind the aspect of a durable laminate work surface. After approval of the mock up, our client was pleased to receive within a short lead time, delivery of the finished consignment which were put to use shortly afterwards.

Alongside this we have been finishing of a pair of Oak rocking chairs which were interesting to say the least. We made a mock up for these as the geometry involved to generate a smooth rocking motion was completely different to that we had been involved with in any previous chair production where stability is a primary design characteristic, the opposite to a rocking chair. After a serious testing I think we have established a comfortable result and are looking forward to our clients face.

Lastly we have been making a few ornamental Oak wheelbarrow planters as gift items, please call should you be interested.

Away from the workshop training is well under way to join a team participating in the Gr8Dundrum Run and we have saw this as a great opportunity to raise funds for the worthy charity Action Cancer. Action Cancer is Northern Ireland’s leading local cancer charity working to save lives and support people affected by cancer. It relies heavily on public donations to provide life-saving services including early detection clinics, health promotion, research, counselling and complementary therapies.

So please click the link below to our fund raising page and help us raise as much as possible which will be of some comfort to us that our hard work training in all weathers has been well worth it.

We were commissioned to make a consignment of doors for a newly built house both internal and external. I met with my clients at a chosen location and was shown an example of an internal door they liked and so 20 in European Oak were made. The externals were made from Iroko to detail as required, Iroko is such a great material suited well to exterior applications in our climate here in Northern Ireland. The Oak doors in the images are unfinished.

Mixed in along with working on the horse lorry we recently received a commission to make 16 folding tables and my client choose Cherry as the material, I sourced a quantity of native Cherry from my timber supplier here in Northern Ireland who advised me the wood came from a tree felled in the Greenmount Estate. It was great to work with and filled the workshop with a most pleasant aroma which hung around to greet me on arrival every morning. The tables were finished with several coats of oil prior to collection and as you can see from the picture below the drying process took up a considerable space.

Another recent delivery was a painted sideboard with Oak top and matching A/V unit with shelving above to a client in Belfast, the colour of both the paint and Oak really work well together.

Just realised their was no blog posting during May, must of been the stormy weather getting us down and now were into June bringing hot glorious sunshine, ideal for tractor shows!

The previously mentioned horse lorry interior is making good headway and as an indication to our progression were at the polishing stage and talk of appliances being fixed in place so all good.

I have posted a couple of images of two external Iroko doors made for a new build. They were finished with clear OSMO oil and in a short space of time have significantly transformed to a lovely deep brown, much darker than when these pictures were taken.

We are looking forward to the colour change on the garden bench which was recently commissioned as a dedication to a meaningful person.

While relaxing in the fabulous sunshine over lunch last week I had a thought that it would be a great opportunity over the holiday weekend to visit my recently installed kitchen and grab a few pictures. With other than the final flooring to be laid the kitchen is finished and my clients are making good use of it arranging the numerous items in the convenient storage places, so with surrounding furniture moved and dog trained we commenced. The style of the kitchen is clean lined where everything had to line through conforming to one and other. I recieved a great deal of input from my clients which made my job relatively easy as they both had a firm idea of what they desired, I mainly transformed that idea into reality.

The worktops are Black American Walnut and are finished to date with 6 coats of Tung oil, this is by far one of the best finishing treatments for a wooden worktop lending itself well to ease of maintenance and safe for food products. Both the paint for the doors/drawers and the lacquer on the Walnut doors is 2 pack which is a very durable spray finish well suited for areas where finger pulls are applied.

The island area created a great deal of working out and is really the focus of the kitchen area with knee space around the convex edge keeping both aspects of the room together. I have attached a couple of production images (please excuse the poorer quality) with the bottom image illustrating the curved doors being created by a series of 3mm MDF layers bonded together and held under pressure over a former in a bag press until the adhesive cures, this process is called lamination.

Our current project underway at the workshop is to fit out the interior of a horse lorry to include a bathroom and kitchen/living space all finished in Cherry wood with a cream leather upholstery, shall be an interesting job so say the least! Watch this space……

An interesting job came along by request to make a Clock tower for the roof of a carport and so being unusual we relished on the opportunity and feel the finished clock turned out well with the sides tiled in brickwork to suit my clients garrage and house. Thankfully we had a good spell of weather last week for the joiners to open the roof and make a support framework with flashing around and was easily completed before the time goes forward………..

An update of other works at present is the painted kitchen mentioned previously has been installed and awaiting finishint touches to the island unit and we are about to finish a freestanding painted bookcase.

I have finally got around to posting a few pics of the Oak semi-elliptical sideboard I mentioned away back in my blog posting for July 2010, as you can see my client is making good use of it and it complements the Oak circular table I made for them just over a year ago which is illustrated on my portfolio page.

I have also received a few images of the Oak shelving delivered before Christmas and with a few items in place it looks really well.

Work is continuining on the Kitchen we have started and hope it’ll not be too long before it will be installed as our client is quite keen to occupy the house following some extensive building works.
