Mid July was the annual Steam Fair at Ballymena Showgrounds organised by The Traction Engine Club of Ulster and this year they held a special feature on David Brown tractors. A few members of The David Brown Tractor Club from Meltham, England (where the tractors were built) brought a few exhibits including the last tractor made at that site. It was a great chance to put faces to names and chat about all things David Brown and purchase items from the club shop. Eric and I had a great couple of days and the fine sunny weather on Saturday made it really special with a bumper crowd and football pitch full of tractors, can you spot Eric my DB780 selectamatic from this pic taken on the Friday?

On Friday past with some friends we took a go at Zorbing, basically for those who are not sure what it is basically its rolling down a hill inside an inflatable ball. It was great fun even though we got totally soaked!!

We like to work with most timber species although on reflection it seems Oak is a very popular choice. Not that I’m complaining as I would regard it as one of my favourite timbers and is such a joy to work with and once polished it transforms to another level beyond any imagination.

We have recently made the Oak bench pictured below for a client and to harmonize with their existing dining table we applied a light blond stain bring up the tone ever so slightly before final lacquering.

Our current project is an Oak semi-elliptical sideboard. Much work is still to do and with such a complex mixture of components many of which are laminated incorporating different radius it can be quite labour-some but the day for a final rub down prior to polishing is creeping closer.

Lately we constructed a deck for our IT consultant which was nice to be working outside in the sun and now the planting has been completed adding to the finished job. From the picture you’ll notice we fixed the boards on the top in a diamond formation to create a visual effect which is fairly pleasing. All the wood was treated with a suitable oil and should last for many years and fingers crossed the sunny weather will remain.

As the summer weather arrived we thought about getting the fleet washed and ready for the occasional vintage tractor run or gathering so after Eric had finished arranging our bags of winter fuel we steam cleaned the pair of them. Dolly the 1200 has been having some mechanical work undertaken recently to the hydraulics and after a full service she is working well although might undergo having the injectors and pump looked at to aid the starting procedure.

As Eric was looking so well after having a wash I took him on the Apple Blossom Tractor Road Run through parts of Co. Armagh raising funds for Musgrave Hospital, Belfast and it was a great day which was well supported by many including a local radio star here in Northern Ireland the one and only Hugh Duncan! Its hard to spot the wee lad in the middle of all those common red and blue machines but he’s in their somewhere.

Meanwhile in the workshop were working on an Oak sideboard which involves a few curves so challenging but worth it and several other projects. The notice board has been delivered and installed with pictures to follow.

We feel this is a much better environment to work in and slightly more inviting to have clients visit so should you wish to make an appointment please get in touch. The pic below was taken from the timber rack and behind me is the storage/assembly/spray area otherwise known as Eric and Dolly’s parking bay.

Recently we have been producing a few Children’s chairs and benches and as you can see from the shop floor pic we are currently working on the church noticeboard as mentioned in our previous posting.
